Enhancements drive sustainable manufacturing and operational excellence at Precision Thin Metals Facility

Rochester, NY: Arnold Magnetic Technologies Corporation (“Arnold”), a subsidiary of Compass Diversified (NYSE: CODI) and leading global manufacturer of high-performance magnets and precision components, highlights a series of recent significant equipment overhauls and environmental upgrades at its new Precision Thin Metals (PTM) facility. These investments are designed to enhance product quality, improve lead times, and reinforce Arnold’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Arnold’s PTM operation opened in their new facility in Woodstock, IL earlier this year, and has undergone comprehensive upgrades to multiple key pieces of equipment. These overhauls are already delivering measurable improvements in both product quality and delivery timelines, strengthening Arnold’s position as a trusted supplier to critical industries.

In addition to equipment enhancements, the new facility incorporates a range of advanced environmental technologies. PTM now utilizes air oxidizers that clean emissions from various equipment, ensuring that approximately 99% of the air released is clean. A closed-loop chiller system has been installed for process cooling water, eliminating the need for continuous fresh water consumption and drastically reducing daily water waste. High-efficiency LED lighting has been implemented throughout the facility, further reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.

PTM has installed a new bromide recycling still, which reduces the need to purchase new degreasing chemicals by approximately 70%. The company has also added a HydroFlo Tech automatic pH balancing filtration system to manage wastewater discharge from the annealing furnace’s wash and rinse tanks.

Arnold’s PTM facility is enhancing its operations through strategic investments in sustainable manufacturing. These upgrades, including advanced environmental controls and critical equipment enhancements, will improve product quality and efficiency while reducing environmental impact. This initiative demonstrates Arnold’s dedication to providing customers with reliable, high-performance materials and solutions that meet contemporary sustainability standards.

marengo to woodstock

Rochester, NY: Arnold Magnetic Technologies Corporation (“Arnold”), a subsidiary of Compass Diversified (NYSE: CODI) and leading global manufacturer of high-performance motors, magnets, & thin metals recently acquired a state-of-the-art 130,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Woodstock, Illinois for their Precision Thin Metals and Alnico divisions.

Arnold will move its operations 14 miles from Marengo, Illinois to the new facility in Woodstock, which is also in McHenry County. The new location was carefully selected to be convenient for the existing workforce to easily make the transition. The relocation will occur during the 4th quarter of 2024 and will follow a structured, phased approach designed to minimize disruption to Arnold’s customers. This transition comes on the brink of Arnold’s 130th anniversary in 2025, opening an exciting new chapter in the history of the company.

Arnold’s CEO, Dan Miller, commented, “The Marengo facility has been with Arnold since 1930, and it has allowed us to serve countless customers, having a permanent place in the history of this company. At the same time, our new facility marks an exciting step forward for our company. It will only expand and strengthen our capacity to continue providing quality products and services to our Precision Thin Metals and Alnico customers across the board.”

David Eakins, Director of Operations for both divisions, commented, “While moving operations as sophisticated and complex as Arnold’s Precision Thin Metals and Alnico divisions is no easy feat, our Team will approach this transition with all of the ingenuity and expertise that has allowed us to run a leading operation for over a century.”

Rochester, NY: Arnold Magnetic Technologies Corporation (“Arnold”), a subsidiary of Compass Diversified (NYSE: CODI) and leading global manufacturer of high-performance magnets and Precision Thin Metals, highlights its Thin Molypermalloy product offerings. With its high magnetic permeability, Molypermalloy is especially suited for RFI and EMI shielding in the Industrial market.

To construct its Molypermalloys, Arnold utilizes nickel-iron alloys and other soft magnetic materials because of their high permeability and low core losses. These soft metal characteristics make them ideal for high performance and efficient energy storage, transfer, and shielding. As with its other products, Arnold offers unique material customization to maximize permeability at customers’ target application frequency.

Arnold also offers adapted testing for Molypermalloys and other high-frequency materials to better predict material performance across applications. Arnold’s standard testing system can measure iron losses up to 20kHz in electrical steels. For applications that operate at higher frequencies, its new High Frequency Tester can provide permeability results, both real and anticipated, from 1MHz – 2.5GHz. These results will be used to inform processing conditions and tailor the material’s response to customers’ unique application needs.

The high permeability, efficiency, and adaptability of Arnold’s Molypermalloys make them an ideal fit for RFI and EMI shielding in Industrial applications. Arnold’s Thin Molypermalloy is available in a range of thicknesses, 0.01″ – 0.00031″ or 0.00030″ – 0.00008″, depending on the width.

At Precision Thin Metals,

a Division of Arnold Magnetic Technologies.

At Arnold, we like demanding applications and we’re always up for a good challenge!  Fortunately, our customers have obliged and provided a number of new applications for our materials.  In order to better predict material performance in these applications, we have updated and extended our testing capabilities.

This year we have added a new electrical steel test system that can measure iron losses up to 20kHz.  The system will also allow us to characterize performance on standard Epstein Frames, Torroids, and Single Epstein Strips.

The setup is excellent at testing electrical steels up to 20kHz, but we also have a number of applications that operate at much higher frequencies.  For these applications, we have commissioned the construction of a High Frequency Response Tester.

The High Frequency Tester will give us Real and Imaginary permeability results from 1MHz – 2.5GHz.

For customers interested in materials such as our Molypermalloy, the High Frequency Tester will allow us to adjust the material’s response by altering our processing conditions.  The output of the High Frequency Tester (shown below) will indicate how the Molypermalloy will perform at different frequencies.

improved testing of molypermalloy nickel

Amorphous Materials such as the Molypermalloy can also be tested with the Amorphous Strip Tester.  This will give us performance data from zero to 20kHz which we can then couple with the High Frequency Tester’s 1MHz-2.5GHz results.  These capabilities still leave an analysis gap from 20kHz to 1MHz, but we’re currently working on new techniques to help fill this gap.
