Navigating government compliance when it comes to rare earth elements for permanent magnets can be confusing. Besides the usual requirements for ITAR and DFARS, there are additional regulations from the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)/John McCain Act, as well as licensing pitfalls to avoid. In this webinar, we’ll review terms, explain the various regulations and help you learn where to find regulation and legislation, points data should be protected, and properly vet suppliers to ensure your relationship with your aerospace, defense and government customers is protected.

  1. Help protect your company from serious violations and loss of business.
  2. Explore some of the differences between general import/export regulations and those specific to aerospace and defense use.
  3. Become familiar with additional regulations pertaining to rare earth elements and other specialty metals.
  4. Gain a deeper understanding of NDAA legislation.

The presentation will wrap up with a short Q&A as time permits.

Speaker: Aaron Williams, VP Sales & Marketing

Williams has 15 years of engineering and R&D experience in the magnetics industry, and is an active participant in industry collaborations including motor and motion, magnetics, MCMA, ECCE and IEEE/IEMDC. He regularly works with learning institutions and research centers such as the University of Kentucky, WEMPEC, Draper Labs, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, ORNL, and AMES Labs and was recently promoted to VP of Sales & Marketing.

Magnetization Losses in Rare Earth Permanent Magnets

This White Paper describes the magnetization losses that are possible in SmCo and NdFeB permanent magnet materials. Reversible losses are first discussed followed by irreversible losses, which can be caused by temperature, external fields or radiation. Losses over time by magnetic viscosity are also discussed. Finally, permanent losses caused by corrosion, hydrogen, high temperatures and radiation are considered.
